Facing your Fear
Have you ever really thought about what fear is?
Like you know broke it down?
Where does it come from and how is it created?
The majority of the fear you experience comes from a thought in your head or in your mind. 9 times out of 10, those thoughts are irrational or illogical. Really they are.
Well let me back up, some fear is useful, you know the kind that prevents you from walking in the middle of the 405 with your head down looking at your phone. Yes, be very fearful of doing something like that. You very likely will die. But that isn’t the fear I am referring to. I am talking about being afraid to do something that you have never done before, something that is “outside of your comfort zone.”
For example, going on a blind date, asking your boss for a raise, firing an employee, sticking to your guns and disciplining your child, speaking up for yourself, saying no, setting boundaries? All of these actions are innocuous in and of themselves. Everyone is different of course and some of those actions are no big deal to you, and others make your heart race just thinking about them.
So the way I see it, there are three possible outcomes in the most basic sense.
- You do nothing, which 100% guarantees your life remains the same, nothing will change, that goal or desired outcome will always be unattainable, AND you will feel the anxiety or discomfort of not taking action to reach your desired outcome.
- You do it and it is messy, or incorrect, and people might laugh and you feel extremely uncomfortable, BUT you will have learned at least one way not to do it and can go back to the drawing board with confidence that you can face your fear knowing you will survive it as long as you are willing to feel a little discomfort.
- You do it, it works out great and you get the desired result you wanted.
So let me ask you this; is the worst thing taking action, failing or succeeding, and possibly feeling uncomfortable?
OR is the worst thing failing in advance by taking zero action and still experience the uncomfortable feeling?
It really is a no-brainer. I LOVE no-brainers.
Once you realize that your fear doesn’t have to cripple you and that if the worse thing that can happen when you take action is you feel a little discomfort, and you are willing to allow those feelings to surface, you will be unstoppable.
Seriously, there is no end to what you can do.
I say, just go for it.
It's your choice.
